Though they are separated by years of football history, both UConn and Notre Dame are having strikingly similar seasons. The Huskies' (4-5) five losses have been by a combined 15 points while the Fighting Irish's (6-3) four losses have been by 18.

Both teams will be looking to break losing streaks when the Huskies travel to South Bend, Ind.

Only 14 minutes into the opening game of the season, Lions star Jeremy Shannon tweaked his ankle on an off-balance jumpshot. The team held its collective breath as one of their senior leaders was helped off the court.

"Without him playing point guard, the game would have been a completely different story," said senior co-captain Bryan Rouse.

Watching freshman Kristin Duquette swim, one probably wouldn't notice anything out of the ordinary, except perhaps that she is fast. But she's not just any average collegiate swimmer, and she doesn't have average goals.

Saturday will be the first, and perhaps the only, time that UConn football takes on the storied Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

While a multiple-game series was in the works earlier this year, it looks like any future games between the Huskies and the Irish are mere speculation.

Everything going according to plan

Most Division I women's basketball coaches would gladly trade their fortunes for Geno Auriemma's. They'd do it in a heartbeat. There aren't too many resumes in the women's coaching ranks that his wouldn't eclipse by leaps and bounds.

Still, the longtime UConn fixture - a six-time National Champion, six-time Naismith National Coach of the Year and the odds-on favorite to raise another banner after the 2009-10 season - broached an interesting point when he addressed the media at an open practice at Gampel Pavilion this preseason.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - It wasn't the prettiest of wins, but no one's going to find Boston College complaining. Behind a staunch defensive effort, the Eagles escaped Virginia with a 14-10 victory that keeps their slim ACC title hopes alive for at least one more week.

"We made a lot of mistakes," said BC head coach Frank Spaziani. "[We] hurt ourselves. But our kids hung in there. To not play very well and to not execute well, to come away with a victory is very gratifying."

Nobody in Scott Stadium could figure it out. No one - reporters, fans, coaches, and administrators - knew exactly who was responsible for making the play. But everyone on Boston College's side sure was glad that somebody did.

With BC clinging to a four-point lead on the road at Virginia, the Eagles defense needed one more stop.
