Some people will stay up all night reading Harry Potter books or spend hours camped out in front of a theater, hoping to be the first to see the next movie-and then there are those who will stand by, scratching their heads, wondering what all the fuss is about.

The Boston College Screaming Eagles Marching Band has not traveled this year due to budget cuts in the Athletics Department. "The band program's budget has been reduced to the same extent as every other department at Boston College because of the economic downturn," said David Healey, marching band director, in an e-mail. Gene DeFilippo, director of athletics, said that the opportunity for a pep band to travel with the team was always a privilege to recognize the commitment the members of the band make. "It was something extra that was given to them," he said.

In an effort to address issues of racial climate on campus, the Student Programming Office (SPO) sponsored a panel of students, faculty, and administrators. The panel was moderated by Karl Bell, assistant dean in the SPO. "Thanks to you all for being here tonight to talk about our campus," he said. He walked down the center aisle of the room, leading students in the "We Are BC" chant more commonly heard in Alumni Stadium. "Except when it comes to race, class, and gender," Bell said. "In those cases, we splinter into our segregated enclaves."
"When we judge people, we usually judge them by, 'Oh, you're CSOM, you have no heart,'" said panelist Jennifer Liao, Asian Caucus president and CSOM '10. Liao said that each person has a story behind who they are and that this story affects their relationships with others. Liao said that her childhood was thoroughly intertwined with her Taiwanese and Chinese heritage. "When I started school, my elementary school was very mixed racially, and I learned that people communicate in different ways," she said.

Hazing, an ongoing issue country-wide, is not uncommon on college campuses.
According to hazingprevention.org, nine out of ten students who have gotten hazed in college don't consider themselves to have been hazed at all. The definition of hazing is "any action taken or situation created intentionally that causes embarrassment/harassment and risks emotional and/or physical harm to members of an organization or team against one's will.

It was a different time when Notre Dame's Stuhldreher and Miller, Crowley and Layden were dubbed the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. It was in 1924 that Grantland Rice gave the four football players from Notre Dame that name, but the game they trailblazed has changed since then, as has the school they played for and the teams their alma mater plays against. All of the Horsemen were shorter than 6 feet and were lighter than 170 pounds. It is unlikely that they would hold their own in a Division I college football game today - they would certainly not add to their program's aura. Even the idea of a football program, an independent one with its own network television contract, would sound incomprehensible to them. There may be more muscle now, but brute strength and brawn, or even the most devilishly devised playbooks, contribute little to mythology.

While most colleges have proctored and scheduled exams, Smith takes a more liberal approach, trusting that students are responsible enough to have unsupervised exams.
