This summer the Connecticut government passed a series of budget cuts aimed at helping to balance the state budget. The cuts, engineered primarily by Gov. Jodi Rell, targeted a variety of state funded organizations, including our very own university. UConn in particular was targeted for a cut of 3 percent in our overall state funding. (3) comments
As you might've noticed, the University removed the trays available in all of the dining halls except South this semester. There has been a chorus of protest that carrying cups, plates and silverware by hand is an unreasonably difficult to demand, to which I ask: what, exactly, do you do at home, or at Thanksgiving dinner, or when you attend on-campus events with free food? Do you tell Grandma and her secret-recipe shortcakes to shove off because she didn't deliver them to you upon a tray? Do you serve Easy-Mac to yourself upon a platter and eschew the free goodies at campus conferences because all that's provided are paper plates? We've all been eating food without trays for the vast majority of our lives. (0) comments
These days it seems that 18 is the new 21, as over 100 presidents of universities across the nation have agreed. A campaign called the "Amethyst Initiative" has been in the works for the past year in order to open up a discussion for lowering the legal drinking age. (2) comments
E. coli is the new Norovirus. Do we rep CT? Yeah, we rep CT! From the 8-6-0 to the 2-0-3! Towers dining hall offered South a 1st-round pick, Pasta Bar rights, and cash consideration for trays. The offer was declined, with no counter-offer. To girl who got so drunk at Carriage last weekend - check your phone. (0) comments
Pratistha: • The Hippocratic oath is about doing no harm. In cases when a person is suffering from a terminal illness and death will otherwise occur, it can be more harmful to force people to endure pain and suffering. • To avoid decisions based upon finances, it would be necessary for physicians and psychiatrists to have an input. I am writing because I was deeply offended by Alex Sanders' backwards view on working women [displayed in her article, "Palin too busy to be VP and mom/grandma (9/04/08)"]. My own personal feelings on Sarah Palin aside, Sanders' argument basically stated that a woman must choose between her work and her family and that career women are making a selfish choice at the expense of their children's wellbeing.
