Huskies begin title defense Saturday against Northeastern

This time, it counts

After the 2008-2009 NCAA Championship banner is unveiled at Gampel Pavilion Saturday, the No. 1-ranked women's basketball team will begin their quest to bring a seventh title to Storrs when they host Northeastern in the regular season opener. As expected, the Huskies breezed through the preseason, beating Division II St. (0) comments

Preseason No. 14 UConn opens their 2009-2010 season at Gampel Pavilion tonight at 7:30 against the College of William and Mary. The Huskies have never lost a Gampel home-opener, dating back to the first game played in the building in 1990. The biggest news of the week came to the Huskies on Monday when freshman Jamal Coombs-McDaniel received full clearance for practice and game competition from the NCAA Eligibility Center. The UConn field hockey team's road to the national championship begins this weekend at the University of Maryland, where they will take on Drexel in the first round of the NCAA tournament. If the Huskies should win Saturday, then they will face the winner of the Maryland versus American game for a trip to the Final Four. (0) comments

The UConn women's soccer team takes on Boston University tonight in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The match will take place in Newton, Mass., on the Boston College campus. The Huskies take part in the tournament for the 27th time in 28 years, and make a return to the field of 64 after missing out last year. (0) comments

After picking up their first Hockey East victory of the season this past Sunday with a 7-2 win over Maine, the Huskies look to capitalize on the momentum as they face off against Boston College (3-3-4, 2-2-1 Hockey East) for a home-and-home series this weekend. (0) comments

This Saturday the Huskies take on Université Laval and Brown University at the Wolff Zackin Natatorium. The meet is another three-way match with all of the regular events found in an NCAA dual meet. UConn hasn't faced Brown for quite some time, and it is the first time in school history that they face Laval, so expectations are high for the meet. (0) comments

UConn's volleyball team heads into the final weekend of regular season action to square off against the University of Cincinnati on Nov. 14 and the University of Louisville on Nov. 15 to end regular season play. After encouraging victories over Rutgers and Seton Hall last weekend. (0) comments

With the season winding down and only two meets to go, the Huskies gear up for a big finish. The NCAA Regional XC Championship will be held in Boston, Mass. this Saturday Last season, 239 runners took part in this race and only three of them were Huskies. (0) comments

The ones to follow up on Field hockey vs. Drexel, Saturday 2 p.m. After winning the Big East tournament championship last weekend, the field hockey team begins its quest for a national championship against Drexel. The Huskies already faced the Dragons earlier this year, winning 5-2 in Storrs. (0) comments

NFL New England Patriots at Indianapolis Colts, Sunday 8:20 p.m., NBC The Colts-Patriots matchup has slowly become one of the decade's most bitter rivalries. Simply put, the Colts and Patriots have been two of the most dominant AFC teams since 2001. On one side of the ball you have future Hall-of-Famer Peyton Manning and on the other, you have future Hall-of-Famer Tom Brady. (0) comments

Before the men's basketball team's final exhibition game last weekend, senior guard Jerome Dyson stubbed his toe entering the building. Badly. As coach Jim Calhoun was quick to point out after the game - in which Dyson dropped 32 points on UMass- Lowell - it wasn't the first time he'd stubbed his toe, so to speak. (0) comments

Last year was easy. I'm talking about Geno-Auriemma-pushing-the-easy-button-every-night-of-the-season-easy. And why shouldn't it have been? The Huskies had Player of the Year Maya Moore paired down low with last year's Most Outstanding Player of the 2009 NCAA Final Four Tina Charles. (0) comments

Everything going according to plan

Despite speed bumps, Huskies still manage to come through when they should

Most Division I women's basketball coaches would gladly trade their fortunes for Geno Auriemma's. They'd do it in a heartbeat. There aren't too many resumes in the women's coaching ranks that his wouldn't eclipse by leaps and bounds. Still, the longtime UConn fixture - a six-time National Champion, six-time Naismith National Coach of the Year and the odds-on favorite to raise another banner after the 2009-10 season - broached an interesting point when he addressed the media at an open practice at Gampel Pavilion this preseason. Darius Smith knows a little something about the cold weather we face at UConn. After all, he's from the coldest and greatest city in the world - all self-proclaimed, of course. "Chicago, man, it's the best city in the world; the windy city," Smith said. "It's nothing; I'm pretty much used to [the cold]. (0) comments

The headline above Indiana's Basketball Hall of Fame Web site reads: "In 49 states, It's just basketball…This is Indiana!" This is a tribute to the amazing collection of talent that has come out of the Hoosier state, including greats like Oscar Robertson and Shawn Kemp and recent players like Mike Conley Jr. (0) comments

The Husky Run typically serves to kick off the practice season for the men's basketball team. And there's a reason why coach Jim Calhoun chooses to start the season with a 5K. His teams like to run - a lot. And the 2009-2010 squad is no different. What the Huskies lost in size down low from last year, with the departures of Hasheem Thabeet and Jeff Adrien, has been made up for in speed. (0) comments

It happened to Shea Ralph three times while she was in Storrs. Mel Thomas and Kalana Greene both suffered the same fate in the span of a month one season. When Caroline Doty planted to haul in a Maya Moore feed on a fast break in the first half of a January meeting with Syracuse at the XL Center last season, there was hardly any doubt - on her part or the part of anyone else - that she would soon be in the same category. When I sat down to write this column last year, I started by talking about my first encounter with Ater Majok. A year has gone by and yet, here I am, in very much the same position. We don't know anything about Majok. He still hasn't suited up in a game for us and he won't suit up until the end of this semester. (0) comments
