The UConn women's lacrosse team will look to match their best start in five years Saturday when they play the No. 14 Towson at the George J. Sherman-Family Sports Complex at 1 p.m.
Both teams are currently undefeated at 4-0 on the season and both are coming off of convincing wins.
UConn rolled over Quinnipiac Wednesday by a score of 17-4 while Towson doubled up on Maryland-Baltimore County Wednesday, 16-8.
UConn coach Bonnie Rosen is preparing the team for a tough game.
"I think this game will be a great test for both programs," Rosen said. "They are a very similar team to us and we need to slow them down in transition on defense and make explosive cuts and sharp ball movement in order to handle their physical and tenacious defense."
The Huskies have outscored their opponents by a combined score of 52-25 this season thanks to successfully playing pressure defense and efficient offense. Averaging 30 shots per game, as well as causing 58 turnovers, the Huskies seem to be firing on all cylinders and have truly diversified their overall game.
Tracy Mullaney has put up a hat trick in every game so far this year and is a statistical, as well as one of the vocal, leaders of this experienced and determined team. With a shot percentage of 0.471 coming into the game as well as 19 points, the Tigers are going to have to make sure they stop her difference making abilities if they look to compete with the Huskies.
But it is the team effort mentality that is the Huskies' biggest strength. A strong core of players such as Shannon Burke, Kristin Link, Tanya Kotowicz and Tammy Michel among others combines to create big opportunities and back up their teammates in every situation. It is no wonder the Huskies' out-number opponents in the total assists category by 12, showing how their teamwork is the secret to their success so far this season.
"We will need to play an explosive yet controlled style of play and limit our fouling," Rosen said. "Possession is the number one way to elevate our game that will require us to win lots of ground balls and other one on one situations."
