In Rane's 10 years together, they've seen a lot of things according to the band, but seeing Santa Claus crowd surf at their Halloween party gig at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute probably took the cake.

Rane started out just like any other band, buddies in high school, playing in each other's basements, and have now blossomed into a band that plays gigs in New England and as far as Bradley University in Peoria, Ill.

The five-member group just released their fifth album "Magnetic North," and will be promoting it at their release party on September 16 at Cheney Hall in Manchester.

"I think the live performances are the best because it's fun to play in a live setting, it's exciting," said bass player Dan Prindle.

Some bands model themselves after already established musical groups, however Prindle thinks they don't fit the mold of any band out there.
"We're maybe a little bit like Radiohead," Prindle said, hard pressed to pick a band similar to theirs, but he admits their influences are groups like Yes, Rush, Phish and other jam bands.

Prindle said he enjoys the whole process, from writing songs, rehearsing, and doing work in the studio.

"Every part has its ups and downs and there are long days, but many things come out of it. It's rewarding to hear things played back," Prindle said.

Back in 2000, they released the album,"Camelopardalis," which is also a constellation that contains a star the band has registered with the International Star Registry.

They have also released three other CDs - one similar to their most recent release, the other a more acoustic album and the latter a real "rocked up" album with heavy guitar in it.

Prindle foresees more albums in their future. He said at current pace it's a year to a year and a half between CD releases and he hopes between tours, CD sales and other gigs they will be able to make a living strictly from playing music.

In addition to their release party Sept. 16, music lovers can check Rane out in Hartford on Sept. 23 at On the Rocks, Oct. 21 at Trinity College, at the Federal Café in Hartford or at Main Pub in Manchester on Nov. 23.
