Issue date: 10/21/05 Section: Focus
John Legend will be performing Saturday night at the Jorgensen Center for Performing Arts as part of Homecoming Weekend. Tickets are being sold by the Student Union Board of Governors (SUBOG), for $15 for students and $20 for non-students.
John Legend is a name growing in popularity across the country. Legend's popularity is renowned among artists and listeners alike, even though people do not necessarily recognize his music by his name.
By the age of five or six Legend knew he had a "calling" to music. According to his web site, "'I used to watch Michael Jackson on television and I figured I could do what he was doing.' Music has been the central theme in the life of Legend (born John Stephens) for as long as he can remember and now, some 20-odd years later, this multi-talented singer, songwriter, musician, arranger and producer is fulfilling his childhood dreams and ambitions."
Legend received four VIBE award nominations on Oct. 10, including one for Artist of the Year. The award show will be aired Nov. 10 on UPN, according to www.johnlegend.com.
His independent releases include, "John Stephens" (2000), "Live at Jimmy's Uptown" (2001), "Live at SOB's" (2003) and "Solo Sessions Vol. 1: Live at the Knitting Factory" (2003).
"Get Lifted" is Legend's major label debut album on Columbia Records. On this album he tries to keep the vibe of classic soul and combine it with newer hip-hop, according to www.johnlegend.com.
"Used To Love U," the first single off of "Get Lifted," was co-written and produced by Kanye West. According to his web site, John said it has "a bangin' hip-hop beat with a little Latin flavor, and a soulful melody and vocal arrangement; it's a cool mix and fusion of different musical influences. We had the Black Eyed Peas horns and guitar player on the track so you get a little of their flavor too."
One of the defining moments of Legend's career was in 1998 when he performed on the track "Everything is Everything" from "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill."
