"It should be completed in June of 2006," said Chuck Morrell, the Associate Director of Campus Activities. "That will give us June and July to move in and get familiar. So, when the students come back in August, we'll be rocking and rolling."
Morrell said he wants students to consider the Student Union to be the "family room" of the campus.
"If dorm rooms are bedrooms and dining halls are kitchens, the Student Union should be the family room," Morrell said, "It should be a place that the students are comfortable and where they want to want to hang out and talk to their friends."
Morrell said he wants the UConn Student Union to be the best in the Northeast and a "world-class" facility for the students.
Phase Two will provide students with new opportunities, including a food court and retail shops.
"Our food court will seat 250 students and will have floor to ceilings glass windows on two sides," Morrell said. "It will be an inviting atmosphere."
Morrell said the food court will include Quick Service Restaurants (QSR's). The OSR's that are planned for the court are Wendy's, Panda Express and Blimpie's. He said students will also be able to get coffee, deserts, sushi, pizza and more on that level. The Union Street Café will join the other food vendors and the existing Union Street Café in the part of the building renovated as part of Phase I will be replaced with a game room.
The second floor of the Student Union will have an information center and ticket booth where students will be able to purchase tickets for events on campus. Morrell said the ticket booth will have extended hours so students will have more opportunities to buy tickets. Morrell said the ATMs will be located on the second floor as well.
When students walk into the Student Union from Fairfield Way, they will be walking onto the second floor, Morrell said.
