What is Rob Casapulla's deal? First he does a flip by writing a column ["Miers Must Not Be Borked" 10/27/2005] bemoaning Harriet Miers' critics in the Senate for resorting to "partisan hackery" while attempting to deny her the up or down vote Republicans used to hold sacred. He goes on to parrot many of the White House's talking points while touting Miers' credentials and claiming she would be an outstanding Supreme Court justice.

In last Wednesday column ["Bush Right With Nomination" 11/2/2005] he does a flop by opportunely abandoning Miers to jump on the Alito bandwagon. He praises President Bush for nominating Samuel A. Alito Jr. and for "finally com(ing) back to conservatives." Thank you Mr. Casapulla, your column serves to confirm Sen. Edward Kennedy's remarks that the Alito nomination comes from a position of weakness not of strength.

Bush has none of the "political capital" he boasted of after the election. His presidency has sunk to the point where even the religious right no longer trusts him. It wasn't good enough that he (wink, wink, nod, nod) knew what was in her heart and knew she would vote the right way. This new reality forced Mr. Bush to surrender to the wishes of the far right and nominate Alito to try to sustain at least some support for his administration moving forward.
