However, due to CFL rules, neither player must report to their respective teams right away. The rights to each player are owned by the teams that drafted them and in the event the Huskies return to their native country they must play for them. This leaves Mayne open to a potential NFL career and allows Ward, a senior, to finish his career at UConn.
Mayne, a native of Montreal, came to UConn in fall 2002 from Vanier Prep High School where he was named first team all-Canada during his senior year. At UConn, Mayne had been a mark of consistency for the Huskies at defensive end, starting in each of his last 23 games. In three seasons of action Mayne recorded 86 career tackles - 20.5 of them for a loss - and recorded 9.5 career sacks.
Entering his final season at UConn, Ward will look to increase his playing time following two seasons in which he saw the field sparingly. After starting six games in 2004, Ward came off the bench this season to appear in all 11 games. During those 11 games Ward recorded 20 of his 36 career tackles and his only sack as a Husky on Oct. 1, 2005 at West Point against Army.
If they choose so Mayne and Ward will join former UConn wide receiver and current Montreal Alouette O'Neil Wilson and ex-Husky corner back Jordan Younger of the Toronto Argonauts as the only active UConn alumni in the CFL. Wilson played for the Huskies from 2001 to 2003 and Younger was active from 1997 to 1999.
The CFL season will begins June 16.
