No one sees it, so who cares, right? Wrong. Underwear is the part of your outfit that will either make or break your entire look and even your reputation.

Boys have boxers and briefs, but for girls, options are endless. The undergarment industry has about as many options to cover your privates as there are personalities. Thongs, briefs, string bikinis, boy shorts, laced, lycra, cotton, mesh and pleather, to name a few.

There are as many styles as there are brands and prices. La Perla, the industry's leader in pricey panties sells lace panties that can set you back anywhere from $300 to $500, bra sold separately. La Perla undies are also the ones Jessica Simpson accidentally paid $500 for during the first season of Newlyweds.

Victoria's Secret, the most well-known name in unmentionables offers the most variety in style as well as price. Diamond encrusted thongs are available upon request, but while you are waiting for your custom pair, settle for the five for $25 selection.

Often times buying nice underwear is a sign of wishful thinking for the weekend. Sometimes it is simply a treat, a little secret for yourself. Even sweats can be sexy when you know about the lace thong underneath.

"It's important to feel good in your underwear," said Sarah Sokoloski, a 7th-semester communications disorders and Spanish major.

Although cute and self-serving, the design of the underwear also serves a purpose. Wearing a skirt with a risqué length? Try a pair of boy shorts. Some types display a little cheek, but some are literally tight, tiny shorts that offer needed protection and modesty.

Wearing a thong will come in handy for clingy pants that show every ripple, including the giant elastic band line of a pair of bikini briefs.

Some brands such as Jockey have "seamless," panties that offer the comfort of briefs but are as undetectable as thongs.

The desire for underwear to go undetected is rather universal, but what about those who want their underwear to not only get detected, but to be displayed? Bargain trend chain Forever 21 sells thongs that are a higher cut so they stick out underneath those low rider jeans and feature designs and jewels on that little triangle that sticks out. Sitting in back of someone in class with a thong is an not only distracting, but also awkward.

"It's fine for when you're going out, people who are drunk always have their pants falling down," Sokoloski said.

Sisqo prefers to "see that thong," but boy shorts are a popular choice nowadays, according to Chris Marquez, a 4th-semester exercise science major and Steve Lanzit, a 3rd-semester business major.

Another unanimous choice is the hatred of "granny panties," which are, "Big, baggy and have lines that go past the butt," Marquez said.

Ron is right. There are almost as many options for guys as girls. Go to any store where you can buy underwear and you can see that. Most guys go with the boxers or briefs but the fashion forward guys demand more styles to fit them. (Continued…)
