The second annual Cardboard Canoe Race was a resounding success with 24 teams competing for a prize of a gift certificate at the Co-Op as well as the honor of being called the champion.

The event drew a large crowd of students from Hilltop, as well as some late Trick-or-Treaters that were still dressed in their costumes when the race began. Seeing the canoes while they were being constructed, they would even float.

The winner of the race was team PB and J which consisted of Jessica Duaz & Peter Bihuniak. Bihuniak a 7th-semester accounting major as he was building his boat said, "I hope it floats."

Team PB and J was followed closely by David McKay & Timothy Potter's Team Domination which came in a close second.

One of the highlights of the race was Team Titanic, who made a raft instead of the traditional cardboard canoe design that most of the other teams followed. The raft reached the other side and came in at a time of two minutes, 45 seconds and received the most cheers.

The teams raced against each other two-by-two instead of all at one time. The object of the race was for both canoes to touch the other side of the pool and then turn around and make it back to the other side. If the canoe capsized, you were automatically disqualified from the race.

All of the teams worked with the same materials - a single Craftsman cardboard box, two garbage bags and a box cutter. Decorations were allowed, but it was forbidden to place anything on your boat that would give it an unfair competitive edge over the others.

The teams raced one another and some of the participants wore odd costumes. One team featured a "Wizard of Oz" theme, while another simply stated their theme was "Beating Dan." Needless to say, when the final results were in, the team did not beat Dan.

"We had 24 teams sign up, which is double from last year," said Jay Frain, the director of HuskyXcursions. "The Halloween theme worked out very well. We decided to have it next year, too."
