"[The exhibition] is 'art as activism;' tying the historical to the contemporary," said Steven Kern, Director of the Benton.

The East Gallery will be showing another edition of "Great Works!" from the Benton's collection.

"In this, the Benton's 40th anniversary year, it is a pleasure to present a new selection of works that define the Benton as a collecting institution. Some are new acquisitions and gifts, others are familiar works from past exhibitions," said the Benton's newsletter.

Some examples of the work being shown include the color lithograph "Saint-Tropez - Le Port," by Paul Signac (French, 1863-1935). Signac is considered the most influential pointillism artist since Seurat. Along with examples of 19th-century French art are 16th, 17th, and 18th-century sculptures, 17th-century Dutch paintings and 20th-century American paintings.

Although the works are drawn from the Benton's collection, "This will be the first time students will see them," said Kern, noting that the pieces being shown have not been on exhibition for about 10 years.
