Internships are an excellent way to gain experience and ties within a student's field of choice and now is an excellent time for students to begin applications for fall and summer internships. However, the process of finding and applying for an internship can be somewhat daunting.
In an attempt to make the process easier, the Department of Career Services held a workshop yesterday entitled, "How To Find a Great Internship." Student turnout was high, and the speech covered topics ranging from writing a resume to proper interview conduct.
About 80 people showed up at the Center for Undergraduate Education to hear Internship Coordinator and Career Consultant Beth Settje give a speech on internships, which was accompanied with handouts and a PowerPoint presentation.
The Department of Career Services videotaped the speech and it, along with other informational DVDs, can be watched in the offices of career services for the benefit of any students who may have missed the workshop.
Beth Settje has worked for Student Affairs since 1991, transferring to career services in 2001. She started the workshop because of the high demand for internship advice.
"So many students come into the office wanting to know how to find internships, it made sense to do it en masse," she said.
Settje kicked off the workshop by discussing the priorities students have to set when looking for internships. Settje recommended assessing one's values, skills and interests and comparing them to various companies to see how well they are reflected in a business. She also advised taking commuting needs and work-hours into consideration. Settje added that the number one skill employers seek is communication, which is the one skill candidates most often lack.
Creating a timeline is another important step in the internship process. Settje recommended creating a list of goals working backwards month-by-month, and making sure a great deal of time is spent on resume building. Developing a resume is the most important part of the project; since it is the document many employers base their decisions on. A good resume should have a clear objective describing what you can do for the organization, emphasizes your skills and lists your experience. The Department of Career Services is available to review student's resumes and helps develop them better.
