The women's tennis team continued its winning ways on Thursday, as they destroyed Fairfield 7-0 at the UConn tennis courts. It was the Huskies' third consecutive victory and their most impressive as they won every single match in both doubles and singles action. The win boosts the Huskies' record to 6-7 and the team is just one win away from reaching the .500 that seemed so far away when they were 3-7.
The dominant play by the women started in doubles, where at No. 1 Liz Dibbs and Christine Burek won their match against Paulina Rys and Courtney Taylor, 8-2. In the No. 2 doubles pairing, Kelley LoRusso and Alli Campitiello defeated Lauran Bonanno and Alexis Accomando for an 8-3 victory , while Jess Porter and Breanna Cheung shutout their opponents Gabriela Davila and Courtney Price 8-0. UConn swept this action to earn the doubles point.
In singles action, the women didn't slow down at all. At No. 1 singles Burek beat Fairfield's Rys in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. LoRusso controlled her match at No. 2 singles against Bonanno, winning in two sets, 6-1, 6-1. Porter defeated Accomando at No. 3, 6-2, 6-4, which sealed the victory for the Huskies. To keep the streak going, Cheung won in straight sets over Davila, 6-0, 6-3 and the team was well on its way to a shutout. Campitiello won her match at No. 5 against Price, 6-1, 6-1. Finishing off the shutout was Ashley Petruzzi, who won in two sets, 6-0, 6-3, over Gretchen Amberg.
It was a big win for the Huskies as they look to complete their climb back to .500 on Saturday when they face Georgetown at noon on the UConn tennis courts.
Men Host Monmouth On Saturday
Coming off a disappointing 4-3 loss to Amherst on Wednesday, the men's tennis team will face Monmouth on Friday at 3 p.m. on the UConn tennis courts. After the devastating loss to Lord Jeffs, the Huskies record sits at 1-9. With seven matches still left on the schedule, the men have already ensured a losing season and need to step up their play in order to avoid the worst record under coach Glenn Marshall's tenure.
