The lacrosse team's match against Boston College, originally scheduled for April 11, has been rescheduled for today at noon at the Sherman Family Sports Complex. The reason for the rescheduling was to fit in the Big East match-up versus Loyola - which was postponed back on Mar. 17 because of snowstorms - on that date.
The No. 18 Huskies (5-4) are carrying a three-game losing streak into the game, coming off a rough weekend where they lost an 12-11 nail-biter to No. 12 Notre Dame and dropped a 22-5 decision against top-ranked Northwestern. During the three-game losing streak, which has come against some tougher competition, the Huskies have allowed 17.33 goals per game compared to a significantly lower 9.75 goals per game allowed during their four game win streak.
The Eagles (4-6) are on a three-game skid of their own coming off losses against in-state rivals UMass and Boston University, and most recently losing to ACC foe and No. 2 North Carolina.
While the loss against Northwestern, a team that has blown out every team they have faced except for their 9-8 loss to UNC, might have been foreseen by some, the loss to Notre Dame was a tough pill to swallow for the Huskies. It marked the second straight game that UConn lost a close, winnable match against a Big East rival.
The Huskies fought neck-and-neck with the Irish all game, backed by a team-high 3 goals apiece from Janet Williams and Whitney Michele. The team was even tied 9-9 with 12:33 to go in the game. In the end, though, Irish attacker Meghan Murphy's goal with 2:04 left in the game iced the victory for Notre Dame. The Irish attacker and Player-Of-The-Year candidate proved worthy of her recognition as one of the top players in the sport with 4 goals in the game.
The tough competition over the past weekend did nothing to stop the amazing pace at which Husky midfielder Shannon Burke is scoring this season. Burke had 3 goals and 4 assists between the two games, leaving her with a team-high 52 points on the year. She is leading the team in both goals with 22, and assists with 30, and does not appear to be slowing down any time soon. Currently, Burke sits just 6 points away from the all-time team record of 203 career points set by Tracey Mullaney.
UConn has typically gotten the better of BC since the two teams started playing each other, going 6-4 all-time against the Eagles. Exactly one year ago to the day, the Huskies walked away from the Newton Campus Field 13-10 winners against the Eagles. In that game, Kristin Link, Tori Joel, Shannon Burke and Janet Williams all had multi-goal games as the team took the lead less than 2 minutes in and never surrendered it again all game.
Following today's game, the Huskies will return to Big East play when they travel to Piscataway, N.J., on April 7 to face No. 17 Rutgers at noon. The next home match for UConn will be the newly scheduled match against Loyola on April 11 at 3 p.m.
