Despite chilly temperatures that dipped into the low 40s, more than 200 students turned out on Dow Field for SUBOG's first outdoor movie Sunday night. The event, which featured a showing of "Wedding Crashers" on a movie-theater sized inflatable screen, attracted a variety of students who seemed pleased with the university providing programming during Labor Day weekend.
"It's the first weekend back on campus, so there was so much drinking and partying," said 5th-semester international relations major Alla Nebrat. "It's nice to have the university sponsor an event where all the students can come together and relax."
The idea for the outdoor movie came about because many SUBOG members noticed that a large number of UConn students actually went home for Labor Day weekend.
"We have this great long weekend and students were leaving because we were not providing programming for them," said SUBOG Vice President of Programming Jennifer Dubois. "We wanted to give students a reason to stick around for the weekend."
The movie did manage to attract quite a mix of students, ranging from first semester freshmen to a few fifth-year seniors. Although the groups didn't awwm ro mingle much at first, by the end of the night students were huddled together on blankets joking and chatting. At several points throughout the movie, the entire field seemed to erupt into fits of simultaneous laughter.
"There was definitely a real feeling of closeness," said Nebrat.
It was this feeling of campus togetherness that SUBOG was really hoping to achieve, according to SUBOG Public Relations Chairman Louis Pietig.
"We are always looking for new ways to branch out to the student body," said Pietig. "We were really hoping to give them something to do on a long weekend, and I think this event really worked."
Many students agreed.
"This was just a really good event and everyone who was there had a really good time," said 5th-semester economics major Paul Concepcion. "I'd definitely come again. The movie was fantastic."
According to Dubois, picking the movie was one of the most difficult aspects of running the event.
"It's so difficult to choose a movie that appeals to boys and girls and that's in a genre that people like," said Dubois. "We really wanted something that would draw a lot of people in."
Based on the high student turn-out and positive overall response, SUBOG is looking to hold similar events in the near future, said Dubois.
"The event was really popular, so, if possible, we'd like to turn this into an annual event, something that we do every Labor Day," said Dubois.
Pietag agreed, but noted that the weather around Labor Day can sometimes be tricky to plan around.
"It's all about the weather," Pietag said. "If the weather holds out, we want to do as many of these sorts of programs as we possibly can."
