'Iron Man' vs. 'Dan The Man'

Issue date: 9/11/07 Section: Sports
Do you ever wonder what it's like to have a miserable sports day when every single one of your teams crumble to defeat, while all of your friend's teams somehow win?
This past Sunday was one of those for me. Not only did my Braves and the New York "Where's Tiki?" Giants get humiliated, but the Patriots, Mets, Yankees and Red Sox all won.
I might be a ble to get over those losses over the next couple days, just because the Braves have a 100-1 shot of making the playoffs and the Giants have a better shot at getting Tiki Barber to come back than having a defense that could stop a quarterback from Eastern Illinois - aka Tony "has a mammoth offensive line" Romo.
But those losses didn't come close to what really got me steamed this weekend. I came to the realization - thanks to some sports statistic junkies - my favorite player since I can remember Dan "The Man" Marino may have one of his most cherished and honored records broken by a guy from Cheese Country.
Some of Marino's records have been eclipsed by Brett Favre over the years since Marino hit the showers the last time in 1999 - career completions (4,967) and most seasons with 3,000 or more yards passing (13) - but no one ever thought his career passing yards record of 61,361 would ever be touched.
Until now.
This year has been a year of record-breaking events and this fall could be Favre's chance to not only break John Elway's winning record - he needs one more win - Favre's 57,706 yards passing is a legitimate threat to surpass Marino's record as well.
Now, I grew up idolizing Favre, because like Marino he was a gunslinger and I couldn't help to cheer for the Packers a little bit because my Mom did like them. But, right now I am asking every defense that plays the Packers to try extra hard to keep Favre in the turf. Now, I don't want you to hurt him, just keep him from passing.
Some sports reporters are saying this record will be hard for Favre to break with a stable of wide receivers equal to that of a Football Championship Subdivision - formerly Division I-AA - school, but I say to them good, he deserves it, because Marino never had a Pro Bowl wide receiver either.

Don't be such a spoilsport. Brett deserves to break the passing yards and touchdown passes records, along with all the other ones possible this year. (Continued…)
