Issue date: 10/18/07 Section: Focus
Relationships are a very important part of life. Whether it is a friendship, being in love or somewhere in between, it is difficult to understand how to go about creating a functional relationship. Whether you are in a long-distance romantic relationship or dating someone at college, it is hard to make a sustainable relationship last with all the pressures of school and temptations of others. Many people agree that it is extremely difficult to balance schoolwork and making time for someone you are in a relationship with.
"I think that if I were in a relationship right now, it would be hard to find time to have quality time with that person," said Rick Bailey, a 3rd-semester psychology major. "During the week I have work and class and then on the weekends, I like to go out. It can be hard to incorporate a relationship into college life."
People in college can make it work, however. If you are going to make the commitment and be in a relationship, here are some things to keep in mind when you think about what would help keep a good relationship going.
Dedicate specific time during the school week to hanging out with your boyfriend or girlfriend. It is fun to hang out with a lot of people, but one-on-one time is essential to a lasting relationship. Whether you are watching a movie, going to the library or grabbing dinner, even the smallest amount of time with just the two of you will help your relationship grow.
With that said, make sure you spend time apart. While in the beginning stages of a relationship, it is very easy to get carried away with feelings of lust. There is no doubt that you will go through a time when all you want to do is be with that person. That feeling of rapture does not have to go away, but just make sure you balance your time wisely and you will benefit from doing so. Keep your identity and make time for your friends and family in order to reassure them that just because you found someone doesn't mean you are letting go of them.
