Issue date: 11/13/07 Section: Sports
The staff of The Daily Campus will be spotlighting one individual each week whose performance stands out amongst all others. This week, we have chosen to honor Ryan Cordeiro, who scored UConn's only two goals in its win over USF in the Big East Quarterfinals.
Name: Ryan Cordeiro
Sport: Men's Soccer
Year: Senior
Major: Sociology
Height: 5-foot-11
Weight: 175 pounds
Hometown: Highland Falls, N.Y.
Describe the play that set
up the first goal of the game.
"O.B. [forward O'Brian White], he launched the ball high in their end, and O.B. worked to get it back like he's been doing all season, which is great. He played it well and the ball bounced to Oscar [Castillo] and Oscar made a great run baseline and he found me. He picked me out, out of a crowd of guys, and I finished it which is what I've got to do when I'm in the box."
What was going through your mind after you scored the first goal to put UConn up 1-0 late in the game?
"After I scored it, I was happy. I was relieved that we were up and I knew there wasn't much time left in the game. I knew that we could close it out because our defense is really strong."
How good did the second goal feel
after you scored it, knowing that
it sealed the victory for the team?
"The second goal just felt good. But you know, the first one was a big one, because that took the pressure off. The second goal was good, though. I was happy that we put another one on the board - another assist for Akeem [Priestley], another goal for me and another goal for the team."
How much of a role have
your teammates played
in your own personal success?
"See, the way I think I score my goals says it all. I'm not beating people, you know, I'm just creating a little bit of space and my teammates are finding me with the ball. I don't have to do much. Most of my goals have either been [off] one-touch or two-touch [passes.] I love my teammates. They're helping me out a lot and we're winning games, so everything is good."
What does the team have to do
to be successful Friday in the Big East semifinals against Louisville?
"We need to have a good week of training and we just need to show up with some intensity and the desire to win."
