Next Monday, dinners at Friendly's will leave behind some holiday good will - the restaurant has agreed to donate 15 percent of each bill to the Children's Miracle Network, through the HuskyTHON Student Organization group.

The fundraiser at the Storrs Friendly's across from E. O. Smith high school is part HuskyTHON's year-round fundraising efforts, which also include an upcoming winter ball in February, and change boxes placed at UConn's cafés. The donation period will take place between 4 and 7 p.m.

"All the money goes directly to the Children's Miracle Network," said Louis Perrone, HuskyTHON's executive director. The CMN, he explains, benefits underprivileged state children who have been hospitalized with serious illness.

Perrone, a 7th-semester economics and human rights major, says his group raised over $13,000 last year, and more than $100,000 since it's inception six years ago.

The organization continues to grow, Perrone said, counting almost 60 volunteers and 18 board member students this year.

Eventually, HuskyTHON hopes to be on par with a similar organization at Rutgers, which expects to collect more than $200,000 in donations this year, Perrone said.

"People enjoy themselves ," said Eric Teisch, HuskyTHON's marketing director, of the fundraising dinners. "They feel good knowing they're making a donation."

This will be the group's third annual event at Friendly's. As Teisch explained, it's an easy way for students to make a difference.

"They're already going out to eat," he said. "They might as well make a donation with it."

Donations to the CMN are used to purchase hospital supplies, equipment and to support research, Teisch said.
