Gov. M. Jodi Rell has told UConn to answer questions about possible irregularities in the transfer of millions of dollars between accounts. University President Michael Hogan has said UConn will cooperate.

UConn has been accused of breaking state law and mishandling millions of dollars.

Charles Urso, member of the UConn oversight committee that monitors construction, accused UConn of failing to report that it shifted construction money between accounts without approval.

Urso called for an audit of these shifting funds at the committee's meeting at the UConn Health Center Tuesday. It's his committee's job to make sure that UConn construction is handled well. He said state law requires the university to report a mishandling of funds.

"There's concern that there may have been expenditures made that's substantial - in the millions of dollars - that may not have been handled [well]," Urso said in a phone interview Wednesday.

He declined to expand on those comments.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell has intervened in the situation, telling the university to answer his questions but stopping short of calling for a new audit.

"The governor supports the work of the oversight committee and wants to see the charge of the committee carried out," said Chris Cooper, a spokesperson for Rell.

Rell got involved in this case because she wanted to ensure the safety of students, faculty and staff, according to Cooper.

"She would like to see the questions answered and does not feel an audit is necessary," Cooper said.

University president Michael Hogan said that if there were questions that needed to be answered to assure the integrity of the university's work, then the university would go forward with it, according to the Hartford Courant.

Hogan could not be reached for comment Wednesday afternoon.

The university says that it has complied with state law and provided the state with every audit.

"The university has done a number of audits on UCONN2000," said university spokesperson Karen Grava. "All audits are shared with state auditors."

I would like to remind whoever wrote this article that the Governor of the state of Connecticut is indeed a woman. (Continued…)
