The Top Five Stories That Affected UConn In 2007
Our Opinion
Issue date: 12/29/07 Section: Commentary
As 2008 is fast approaching, the staff at The Daily Campus took a look at all of the events which affected UConn this past year and after voting, have narrowed the list down to the top five. Here they are - the five stories which most affected university life as decided by The Daily Campus editorial board.
5. UConn Football Wins Big East Championship: It is hard to find a Husky student these days who feels bad about having Coach Randy Edsall at the helm. Despite being a Syracuse alumnus, Edsall has made himself eternally welcome in Storrs by taking a former I-AA football nobody to the top of the Big East in just three short years in the conference. The Meineke Car Care bowl may only be the harbinger of better things to come for the newly crowned champs. And that old mantra about UConn being a basketball school? It's true no longer.
4. President Hogan Takes the Reigns: Philip who? With a tenure that ended upon an eerily quiet transition, President Austin was replaced in the fall by the photogenic, sweet-talking Iowan named Michael J. Hogan. While the public blitz is a change in pace compared to the private nature of Austin, it's nice to be able to put a face to the name of the man in charge. The air of accessibility is nice, but so is a new building, a new faculty member and increased academic prestige. Next semester, the university will start to grade President Hogan on these matters.
3. The Tragic Death of Carlee Wines: On January 22, the life of one university freshman came to a senseless and unnecessary end. Carlee Wines, 19, a pre-kinesiology major and sister of Kappa Alpha Theta was struck by a car while crossing North Eagleville Road in the early morning hours two days earlier. A family, sisterhood and university grieved - and then took action. The driver of the vehicle is slated to be sentenced next month and the crosswalks are now adorned with reflective neon signs. Increased signage and driver awareness can't guarantee protection from another heartbreaking incident, but they can offer a reminder that life is fragile and treating it carelessly only ends in sorrow.
