Tomorrow night students will have the chance to candidly ask university administrators hard questions face-to-face. At 7 p.m. in Student Union room 331, USG will be hosting the first open panel of the semester in a series of "Straight From The Source" events scheduled to take place this spring. The two-hour event will be moderated by Ryan McHardy, USG president.
Administrators scheduled to participate include: John Saddlemire, vice president of Student Affairs; Barry Feldman, vice president and chief operating officer of the university; Veronica Makowsky, vice provost for Undergraduate Education; Lee Williams, dean of students; C. Dennis Pierce, director of Dining Services; and Steve Kremer, director of Residential Life, according to USG.
Invitations have also been extended to the Department of Athletics and the UConn Police department, according to McHardy, an 8th-semester political science major.
"This event is an incredible opportunity to get to the bottom of any rumors or perceived problems on campus," McHardy said. "In the past, students have brought forth challenging questions that have led to change in themselves … this also provides students with the opportunity to meet many of the decision makers at the university on a personal basis."
The event will also include refreshments and giveaways, according to USG.
Two more "Straight from the Source" panels will be held this semester on the first Tuesday of each month, according to a USG press release. The first will occur on March 4 and the second on April 1. They will all be from 7 to 9 p.m. in room 331 of the Student Union.
Past installments of "Straight from the Source" have centered around topics such as housing issues and experiments, the extension of weekend bus service and enforcement of the student code.
When the panel last met in early November, administrators were asked about the possibility of extending weekend bus service till 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights to provide another way for students to safely complete late night trips. At last month's university Board of Trustees meeting this idea was discussed again and plans are now in the works to experiment with extended weekend service.
Students also attempted to ask tougher questions concerning how the accurate and full enforcement of the student code. Specifically, concerns were raised about the student code allowing students on trial for violent crimes stemming from documented incidents in UConn dorms to live in university housing.
All members of the campus community are encouraged to come, listen and inquire.
