A fire truck waits outside of Arjona where a trash can caught on fire yesterday.

A trash can fire outside of Arjona began to spread to some leaves and grass around 3 p.m. Tuesday, but fire officials arrived quickly and put out the blaze before it could reach any cars or buildings.

Fire Captain Fran Raola said fire was started accidentally.

"It seems like the fire was started from discarded smoking materials," he said. "But we're having some fire marshalls investigate the remains just to be sure."

Arjona was not evacuated, although some students fled voluntarily.

Raola praised the students for calling the fire department so quickly and not panicking.

Alexandra Hepp, a 3rd-semester grad student studying German, saw the flames and said that it wasn't a very menacing blaze, and that most onlookers didn't seem concerned.

"From the building it was easy to see that the smoke was coming from the trash can," she said. "It didn't seem likely that it would spread.

"It was a little scary though, The flames were really high."
