Get involved, get with UConn PIRG
Issue date: 9/5/08 Section: Commentary
The future of the United States resides within the young voting citizens of this great nation. With the recent change in political, social and economic conditions, it becomes more and more important for the youth of America to pay attention to their surroundings and take responsibility to better them. It is becoming clearer that the younger generations of today care about their world and want to make it a better place in each and every way possible. The recent rise in the voting percentages involving the youngest voting bracket shows signs of a change.
More and more younger people are working for change not just by voting, but by getting involved with various groups that incite the public to vote. One such organization is ConnPIRG at the University of Connecticut. The New Voters Project, and many others like it, are responsible for bringing attention to university students that voting numbers in the recent past have declined. NVP encourages and inspires students to get involved. Due to these organizations' efforts, people are realizing that everyone's vote matters.
An individual can make a difference during Election day. In 2006, Congressman Courtney was elected by a margin of 83 votes, showing that when people vote they can voice their opinions to the political world. UConn students hold great pride in their sports and academics. However, once the elections are over, they will hold even greater pride in their voting for a change and better future.
