REVIEW: Jessica Simpson fails at going Country
STARS: 1.5/5

Issue date: 9/11/08 Section: Focus
When most of us think of Jessica Simpson, we think of blonde hair, the "Chicken of the Sea" incident and breast-shaking dance moves to catchy pop music. However, Simpson is trying to change at least part of this image with her new country CD, "Do You Know."
The album, which features an almost comical looking pouty-faced Simpson on the cover looking ever so vulnerable on a park bench, is Simpson's first attempt on the country scene. The CD features her voice not as the whiny pop star we once knew, but instead as a whiny pop star with a twang.
Though Simpson has been considered one of the strongest pop stars of her time with some of the most vocal talent and power, she chooses to keep it safe in most of the album avoiding really cutting her voice loose. She instead uses a combination of breathy little-girl voices and constrained mid-range vocals that do nothing to display the true power and range of her abilities.
Though songs like "Pray out Loud" and "Sipping on History" may have a real country feel, fans of Simpson's previous pop albums should not be too discouraged. This album does not have an over-bearing country feel, and her pop background is still very much present in catchy songs such as singler "Come on Over" and "Still Beautiful."
Dolly Parton lends a hand on the song "Do You Know," a song written by Parton for Simpson, which features earth-shattering lyrics such as "Passion beneath your nails just answer my desire / Seems that I am more or less consumed here in your fire," which sparks more of a desire to wash your hands than to get it on. However, the song is exceptionally catchy and will eventually trick you into singing along.
Though serious country fans may not be able to get their fix with this CD, previous Simpson fans will definitely find this new addition worth taking a listen to. While it is a different sound, it is still very much the same Jessica Simpson that we all have come to know and tolerate. However, for those who have never really found Simpson to be an exceptional artist, don't carry too much hope - she still isn't.

How can you even review a song (Do You Know) when you can't get the lyrics correctly? It's:
"Passion warmth and eagerness just adds to my desire,
Seems that I am more or less consumed here in your fire". (Continued…)
