One of the best things about summer, besides ice cream and no school is enjoying the outdoors. The majority of students found themselves on any given summer day at the beach, on a boat, running or any other sort of outdoor activity. So while fall may be creeping up behind us, there are still ways to enjoy what's left of these last days of sun.
Hiking
For once, the fact that Storrs is entirely by woods and fields is a good thing for something besides the cows, One little slice of Connecticut heaven is actually teaming with biking some believable hiking and biking trails. Hiking is a great way to get outdoors and get some exercise while having an awesome time. Try the Bradley Buchanan Trails located on Route 89, which feature 22.2 acres of protected land and trails.
Diana's Pool
This section of the Natchaug river, is a great way to cool off during the last of our hotdays. This area is a natural pool of fresh water located in South Chaplin, about 20 minutes from campus. With natural waterfalls at the top and bottom of the pool, this is a great area for outdoor and swim fans alike. Swimming not your thing? Take a picnic and munch-out, or take a date for an afternoon of inexpensive outdoor fun.
The Mansfield Drive-in
and Marketplace
While the drive-in movie experience may seem like something only Danny and Sandy were able to enjoy, this dated movie watching experience is still alive. Located on Route 32, the Mansfield Drive-in will be playing movies such as "Tropic Thunder," "Pineapple Express" and "The Dark Knight" on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays until Sept. 28. Tickets are $9.00 for adults. On Sundays, the field hosts the Mansfield Marketplace, eastern Connecticut's largest flea market from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, while finding some interesting merchandise.
UConn Outdoors/Adventure Center Programs
Though many of the UConn Outdoors programs may be filled, there are many spaces available in the mountain biking programs and the team geo-caching scavenger hunt, and many more. These trips are a great way to enjoy the outdoors, while meeting new people on campus. They are also very affordable when compared to usual outdoor recreational prices. If the trips you were interested in are all full, head over to the UConn Adventure Center, where you can rent mountain bikes, tents, hiking equipment and more. No weekend plans? Try having a campout in your friend's backyard, and get a six-person tent for $45.
