Thursday, Friday, Saturday, the occasional Sunday or Monday bar nights, Tuesday 50-cent pitchers, Wednesday afternoons at Thirsty Dog. It's no secret college students like to drink. However, the secret is out on what happens after drinking.

While the biggest concern on the minds of some students is who to go home with at the end of a long night, others focus on finding a cure for what is commonly known as "the drunk munchies."

Contrary to popular belief, the munchies are not reserved for "stoners" alone. Drinking alcohol not only dehydrates a person, but leaves one's stomach feeling empty and one's mind, well, not exactly clear.

For most college-aged students who drink, the No. 1 question at the end of the night is - what's on the late night menu? So where are college kids turning to fill their stomachs in times of emptiness?

"On my walk home from a party I usually wander to Sgt. Pepperoni and wait out the crowd," said Gretchen Burhans, a 5th-semester accounting major. "It's convenient because they have great food and take Husky Bucks. I don't mind the wait because at the end of the night, I'm either going home with a man or a pizza."

said Owen O'Connor, a 7th-semester physiology and neurobiology major.

Lia Ribustello, 5th-semester molecular and cellular biology major, admits that, when the drunk munchies hit, she can't wait in long lines. "I just go to my room and eat Tostitos and salsa. Hits the spot," she said.

While some students stuff their faces with pizza or wings, others eat whatever food is left in their rooms such as popcorn, chips, macaroni & cheese, or Ramen noodles.

Some students, on the other hand, try to steer clear of the drunk munchies when possible.

"My roommate always feels bad about himself the next morning after eating too much while intoxicated, so I just tell myself not to end up like him," said Matt Cesca, 5th-semester accounting major.

That's motivation enough for him to avoid the lure of late night binging.
