REVIEW: Bring tissues to 'Nights in Rodanthe'

Issue date: 9/30/08 Section: Focus
Better get the tissues ready for this one! Richard Gere and Diane Lane star in this adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' "Nights in Rodanthe" story as two unhappy adults who find themselves again in each other.
Diane Lane plays the role of Adrienne Willis flawlessly. As a dedicated housewife whose life has been uprooted by infidelity and battles with her teenage daughter, she drives to the coast to watch over her friend's inn for the weekend. Her only guest, Paul Flanner (Richard Gere), checks in at the hotel with the intention of speaking to a previous patient's family, and then leaving to reconnect with his estranged son.
The majority of the movie takes place in the tiny coastal town of Rodanthe, where Gere and Lane's characters first meet. The luxurious inn where the movie takes place is actually a beach house called Serendipity on Cape Hatteras in North Carolina. The magnificent height of the house as well as the grand scale of windows, make it look like a mansion of mirrors.
The romantic chemistry between Gere and Lane is far from sophisticated.
But it is in fact magical. As a woman who gave up everything for her family, and as a man who sacrificed spending time with his loved ones because of his pledge to be a great doctor, they teach each other the forgotten secrets that are the keys to happiness. He gives her the direction to rediscover herself as a woman, artist and mother, and she gives him the courage to see with his soul and reveal himself for who he really is as a father, and lover.
"There's a kind of love that makes you feel that anything's possible. I want you to know that you can have that," as Diane Lane tells her daughter. "Nights in Rodanthe" confirms that it is never too late for a second chance.
