On National Coming Out Day, out is in

Tomorrow is a day where everyone can get involved, though I don't expect everyone to "come out of the closet." However, every person, queer or not, can embrace a system of acceptance. For the many persons who are not GLBT, one can make a pledge tomorrow to acknowledge the existing discrimination against the queer community and what role one can play to end it. Maybe some will choose to stop using the phrase "That's so gay" in recognition of the many people that are indirectly hurt by such language. Maybe others will choose to sign an ally pledge on Monday or Tuesday at a table along Union Street.
Hopefully tomorrow every person will start to move beyond tolerance and towards a system of equality, where a persons sexual and gender identity makes no stamp on his or her worth as person. Let someone start to live his or her life for the better. After all, it is very likely that every person who reads this will have either a family member or friend who is gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. Because of this, I encourage people to be receptive to their loved ones who may come out tomorrow or some day in the future.
