Issue date: 11/5/08 Section: Sports
The staff of The Daily Campus will be spotlighting one individual each week whose performance stands out amongst all others. This week, we chose to honor Karen Gurnon, who scored her first goal of the season to start the Huskies' second half comeback against Georgetown in the first round of the Big East Toournament.
Name: Karen Gurnon
Sport: Soccer
Year: Freshman
Major: Exploratory
Hometown: Tolland
Position: Defense
Where does the victory over Georgetown rank among wins this season? Winning in the Big East Tournament is important. We need to do well if we want to make the NCAA Tournament.
What did it do for the team's confidence to fight back against the Hoyas after being down a goal? It does a lot. Getting a goal like that gives our team the momentum.
What teammate has taught you the most this year? This year was the first year I ever played defense, so Jessica Diakun and Brittany Taylor have helped me a lot. Stephanie Labbe has helped me a lot too.
If someone was to look at your iPod, what would they find? A lot of country music. Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban and Rascal Flatts.
Do you have any pregame superstitions? I'm not really superstitious. Cory Bildstein was wearing my pants when I scored though. Maybe she'll wear those from now on.
The Weekly Honor Roll
Rebecca Murray, volleyball: Murray matched her season high six blocks in the Huskies' sweep over Seton Hall last weekend. For the weekend, she compiled 16 kills, 11 digs and 10 blocks against Seton Hall and Villanova.
