Turning your car on and realizing that it's going to take about 10 minutes to warm up completely or that there's a new ticking noise stemming somewhere from the glove compartment can be a bit disconcerting. So can walking outside into the cold Storrs air at 8:44 a.m., just to see what was supposed to be the 8:46 a.m. Blue Line pull away from the bus stop and head toward campus, without you on it.

Winter weather can bring a plethora of disappointments, but don't let the cold temperatures ruin a fun evening. Putting together the perfect outfit for a night out in Storrs this winter may not be easy, but here are some tips on how to stay warm, and fashionable.

Don't forget your coat

Your parents have said it, and now it's time to abide by it. Your winter jacket may not be your most fashionable accessory, but it's really stupid to go out without it. Winter weather brings along the sniffles. Going outside even for short periods of time without the proper attire can bring sickness fast.

Since leaving the jacket behind is not an option, just remember there are a bunch of ways you can bring your jacket along if you're smart about it.

Don't "hide" your jacket in the coat closet because there are about 20 other people who are planning on doing the same thing. Try putting your jacket in a place that is a bit more obscure and less likely to be found by other partygoers. Some options could be under a bed, behind a couch or in kitchen cabinets.

Layering

Winter weather calls for some more layers than the summer sun. However, there are several clever ways to dress (and layer) up an outfit.

Scarves are winter's best accessories. Coming in almost every color and pattern, a scarf can bring color to outfits that don't have that much going on to begin with. Try pairing a brightly colored scarf with a plain top for some added pizzazz.

"I usually wear a scarf when I go out in the winter," said Kelsey Gallagher, a 6th-semester management major. "It accents most outfits, so it's always pretty fashionable."
