track, breaking the program record she set at Brown, with a shot put throw of 16.16 meters. Freshman Victoria Flowers took second in the shot put, with a throw of 14.71 meters, and also won the weight throw event with a 18.40 meter effort.
Star sophomore Trisha-Ann Hawthorne made her season debut and continued to shine at UConn as she won the 60-meter dash with a blazing 7.43-second run. Sophmore Leah Andrianos won the mile for UConn as well, crossing the mark at 5:09.8.
The meet at Yale was followed by perhaps the most dominating performance by the team this season at the Army Invitational Jan. 17, where they finished first and won 14 of the meet's 17 events.
Flowers and McMillian won the weight throw and shot put, respectively, while Hawthorne won both the 60-meter and the 200-meter dashes. The rest of the team followed suit with a bevy of first place finishes: Andrianos finished first in the mile, George in the 60-meter hurdles, Graves-Fulgham in the 400, junior Chanell Smith in the 500, sophomore Meghan Cunningham in the 800, senior Kaitlin Vaughn in the 3,000, and junior Carlin Knight in the high jump.
This consistent level of high performance by UConn women's track and field has made the future look bright for the program. It has even led to two of its athletes, Hawthorne and McMillian, being named Big East Women's Field Athlete of the Week.
On Saturday, they hope to carry their optimism and momentum from these three meets into a good showing at the Terrier Classic in Boston, and continue to put the team and its athletes in a place to compete for the Big East, New England, ECAC, and even NCAA championships later in the year.
