The holiday season has come to an end and maybe you didn't get as many hours at your old job that you thought you would, or maybe the checks from your relatives weren't as hefty this year. All you know is, spring break is looming and you've got pennies in your bank account.
Have no fear, for here are some great ideas for spring break getaways that won't break your piggy bank. You may not come back with a killer tan and obscene photos, but you will at least make a crafty escape from Storrs.
1) Road Trip
The road trip, though far from free, is a cheaper option than the Acapulco getaway some of your more financially-inclined friends are chirping about. Plan a road trip to Daytona Beach, Fla. or head up to Montreal. Get a couple friends to split gas, snacks, and motel room fees with you, and you are golden. Pack cameras and sun block. A spare tire wouldn't be a bad idea either.
2) The Dorm Room Crash
Chances are, you have at least a couple friends who chose not to follow the proud Husky path. Many colleges will have a different spring break than ours, which means your buddies at other schools are still going strong on the weekends at their respective campuses.
Make sure you don't make any unannounced visits, no one wants a surprise guest for the weekend. Don't expect meal swipes or free booze, bring some of your own money and a sleeping bag in case you are setting up camp on a dorm room floor.
Visiting friends from different schools will give you an idea of what college life is like outside of 06269. Make a trip to New York City or Boston, or stay at one of the many colleges Connecticut has to offer. You will have a great time catching up with friends and won't be breaking out big bucks.
You can also combine the road trip and the dorm room crash. "You can go on a college road trip and stay on all your friends' floors. You get to hang out with drunk college kids all week," says Richard Amato, 6th-semester biology major.
