The Athlete of the Week: Maya Moore
Issue date: 1/27/09 Section: Sports
The staff of The Daily Campus will be spotlighting one individual each week whose performance stands out amongst all others. This week, we chose to honor Maya Moore who scored 27 points in UConn's win over No. 6 Lousiville.
Name: Maya Moore
Sport: Women's basketball
Year: Sophomore
Major: Exploratory
Hometown: Lawrenceville, Fla.
Position: Forward
ainst Syracuse - setting a new school and conference record for 3's with 10 and becoming the fastest player in the program's history to reach 1,000 points - Moore is providing a strong argument for another All-America selection.
In the team's win against then-No. 2 UNC last Tuesday, Moore unloaded for 19 points and 12 rebounds, doing most of the damage in the second half. She followed up that game with 18 points against Cincinnati.
On Monday night, Moore scored 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds - her 10th double-double of the season - against No. 6 Louisville to lead the No. 1 Huskies to their 20th straight win and maintain a 20-0 record for the second year in a row.
What does this win - especially it being a Big East win, mean to the team?
It definitely means more because it is a Big East game. Our next goal is to win the regular season with the Big East, and Louisville's one of the tougher teams in our league.
It's been a pretty impressive week going back to seven days ago and North Carolina. What's different about this team than maybe two or three weeks ago?
One thing I can think of is we've been having some pretty good practices. I think as a whole, everybody is taking on responsibility to get better.
When there's talk about the three or four best players in the country, Angel McCoughtry always comes up. How much does it motivate you when there's another player at that level?
Well, I mean, it's not so much that I use that as motivation 'cause, you know, in every game you want to come out being motivated no matter who you're playing. But it definitely made the game more exciting and more fun to play. So tonight, we knew it was going to be a battle and you could see it you know, at times.
What does being presented with the 1,000 point game ball mean to you as a player and how did it feel when you had that 40-point performance against Syracuse?
It's one of those things that I honestly don't really think about. I'm just trying to go out and score as many points as I can, you know, taking good shots of course. It's one of those things I like to call icing on the cakeā¦but there's still a long way to go and I'd like to add some more points to that
