The African Student Association (ASA) is throwing the second annual Cafe Afrique from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Rome Ballroom.

ASA is a cultural organization that promotes the unity of students interested in Africa and its affairs and generally promotes two events throughout the course of the academic year.

"We're doing it [Café Afrique] on a much larger scale this year," said Ashley Williams, the president of the ASA. "We've improved things we've done in the past and we're hopefully expecting a much larger turnout.

"It started with our President 2007-2008," Williams said. "We felt like we needed to give back to our community back home in Africa and not just talk about it in our meetings."

Admission to the event is a minimum donation of $3; however, students and faculty are encouraged to give more to support a good cause. All of the proceeds for the event will go toward Keep A Child Alive.

"We figured we'll pick an organization that may be familiar to some people in the audience," Williams said. "While their headquarters is in NY; there are various locations of this department throughout Africa."

Keep A Child Alive is "dedicated to providing life-saving anti-retroviral treatment, care and support services to children and their families with HIV/AIDS in Africa and the developing world by directly engaging the global public in the fight against AIDS," according to its Web site.

The purpose of the event is to specifically give back to charities that are rooted in Africa, according to Williams.

"We often neglect to give back to our roots and feel that as an organization, we will begin to make that happen," Williams said.

The event will have a variety of music and great poetry, as well as a plethora of performances.

"You can look forward to just having a good time and gaining some information about the foundation we're donating all the proceeds too," Williams said. "Capoeira and Pivitol Motion will also be in the house to perform for us."
