The UConn community kicks off its annual Black History Month celebration tonight at 5 p.m. in the Student Union Theater.

Tonight's ceremony will include an array of presentations, such as a lecture by the president of the Connecticut chapter of the NAACP, Scot X. Esdaile, and a musical performance.

The Mahogany Ball, sponsored by the Black Student Association, follows on Saturday at 8 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.

The Dodd Center will also be hosting an African American Music Film Festival on Feb. 12 and 26, which also complements the Charters Archives of Blues and Vernacular African African Culture. Films will include "The Freshest Kids: A History of the B-Boy" and gospel music in "The Jubilee Singers: Sacrifice and Glory."

On Feb. 20, the African American Cultural Center will be presenting the Mr. and Mrs. Black UConn Pageant, themed "Leading a Legacy."

And, on Feb. 27, the AACC will celebrate its 40th anniversary with live student performances, including music and dance ensembles.
