The men's track team enjoyed a successful weekend at the Collegiate Invitational with several Huskies coming through with solid performances. Sophomore Aaron King's first place finish in the college division long jump highlighted day one of competition. King led the field with a jump of 24 feet 8.5 inches.
Also coming up big was the Distance Medley relay team, who finished in 5th place in the championship race. The Distance Medley ran a time of 9:46.65, a nearly 30 second improvement on last week's race at the Harvard Quad. Sophomore Dan Holst also scored a point with an eighth-place finish in the 1000m run.
At the end of the day, the Huskies sat in a tie for 10th place overall with 10 points on the day.
Day two saw more success for the Huskies. Freshman pole vaulter and local high school track star Matt Alexander of Tolland took first place in the college division pole vault. Alexander set a new personal record with a height of 16 feet 8.75 inches.
The high jump was another strength for the Huskies, as seniors Marquis Thomas and Ellis Gaulden both placed in the championship high jump. Thomas placed 4th with a jump of 6 feet 10.25 inches, and Gaulden was right behind him in 6th place with a jump of 6 feet 8.25 inches. As usual, the 800m run was a strong event for the Huskies. Junior Mike Rutt placed 6th in the championship race with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:50.23.
Overall, the Huskies finished with two first place finishes and five more top ten performances in one of the nations biggest track meets of the year. The huskies will return to action next weekend in the Lafayette-Rider Invitational.
