Though many students wanted to turn beloved groundhog Punxsutawny Phil into a hat after he predicted six more weeks of winter still to come, others found his news to be a blessing. For members of the skiing and snowboarding community, this news means at least another few weeks of snowy trails and gnarly terrain parks at discounted end of the year prices. So, before all the snow turns into slush, make the most out of your money and get the best of the last runs of the season at some of these New England mountains.

Mount Southington

Only about an hour down Interstate-84 from campus, Mt. Southington is an inexpensive and local way to make the best of the last of the snow. Featuring 14 trails, seven lifts and a terrain park, the mountain is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends. An inexpensive alternative to some of the larger mountains, tickets can be purchased during certain times of day for as little as $23 with numerous coupons available online.

"It's the only ski area in Connecticut that has night skiing, which is nice," said Tyler Leslie, a 6th-semester fine arts major. "It's not that big, but everyone who works there is really nice."

Mount Sunapee

Located in Newbury, N.H., around two-and-a-half hours away from campus, is Mt. Sunapee. With 65 trails, 10 lifts, a SoBe Freeride Zone and terrain parks, this mountain covers 230 acres of skiable terrain.

According to their Web site, the Freeride Zone holds "over 30 features between Pipeline and Jetstream. Our S-rail and Urban Down Rail are setup on the top of Jetstream followed by the 50-foot rail, 32-foot flat box, 24-foot uprail, and a few other kickers with the Wall and Totem Pole at the bottom."

Make sure to bring a college ID, as college students receive 50 percent off full-day adult lift tickets Monday-Friday during non-holiday periods, and $15 off lift tickets during weekends and holiday periods. Other deals include Magic Monday (Everyone can get lift tickets for $40), Ladies Day Tuesday (For $46 ladies can purchase a full-day lift ticket and enjoy a complimentary luncheon buffet), Twofer Wednesdays (Two can ski or ride for $62) and many more coupons online.
