Slumped in Singleville?

Valentine's Day is a holiday you either love or hate. It seems to be a day full of high expectations if you have a valentine, and a day of mourning if you are single. However, being single on a holiday made for relationships does not have to be horrible. There are plenty of things to do that don't include flowers and chocolates from the opposite sex.

Now, of course there is the obvious solution, which is getting together with a bunch of your dateless friends and spending some quality time together.

"I'm spending the night with three awesome girlfriends who I haven't seen since the summer because I was studying abroad in London," said Amanda Kivell, an education graduate student. "We are going to see the Vagina Monologues, and will probably spend lots of time gossiping, catching up and being total girls."

If you would like to get more adventurous than a simple get-together, you could take a spontaneous road trip. Valentine's day does fall on a Saturday this year. This leaves more than enough time to get to your destination and back.

According to life123.com, "new horizons will help you forget the baggage associated with Valentine's Day. If you're in a place where nobody knows you and your history, you'll have the freedom to settle in and think about who you are and what you want from life. Ultimately, traveling by yourself is a liberating experience, and what better day to try this than on Valentine's Day?"

Boston and New York City are easy weekend trips. And Providence, R.I., and Cape Cod, Mass., are fun places to visit that are a manageable driving distance from campus. If you don't want to take the trip alone, ask a few friends, either way it will give you a sense of adventure and keep your mind off the holiday.

Another great way to fill the void of a dateless Valentines Day is to leave the dorm life for the weekend and get a taste of home.

"I'm actually going home for the weekend," said Emily Salimbene, a 4th-semester psychology major. "It will be good to see my family and friends that I haven't seen in a while."

Going back to your house where things are comfortable and familiar will allow you to spend time with the ones you love, and distract you from the holiday. Hopefully a few home cooked meals are provided during the visit as well.

Now, of course, if none of these options seem appealing, and you would rather just hang low this Saturday, the option of watching your favorite movies in your favorite pajamas is always available. And if you end up hanging out with a group of single friends, venture out- if you run into another single group, they are most likely single too.
