Game of the Week: women's basketball 95, Pittsburgh 42 (Sunday) - On the eve of the men's team's Big Monday showdown with Pittsburgh, the women demolished the No. 19 Panthers at Gampel while clad in pink-trimmed uniforms as part of the Pink Zone breast-cancer awareness initiative. UConn opened the game scoring 22 points and allowing just three over the first 5:51. Renee Montgomery scored 20 points to commemorate the day she became the first active player to be added to the Huskies of Honor.
Key Performance: Sean Erickson, men's ice hockey (Saturday) - Senior defenseman and team captain Erickson helped the Huskies to their most thrilling moment of the season, blocking a shot on one end of the ice and taking it the length of the rink for the game-winning goal in overtime over Canisius. It was his first of the year and 10th of his career.
Big Letdown: men's basketball vs. Pitt (Monday) - Questionable officiating aside, the Huskies were unnerved by Pittsburgh's trademark physicality and a pair of defensive breakdowns in the waning minutes cost them their lead atop the conference standings as well as their No. 1 ranking. Coach Jim Calhoun delivered a post-game tirade for the ages, stopping short of calling out an individual referee for a horrendous fourth foul on Hasheem Thabeet midway through the second half.
Wish We Were There: softball wins first game of 2009, Lafayette, La. (Saturday) - Junior ace Tricia Sullivan tossed a complete game and struck out six Kentucky Wildcats while allowing just two runs. UConn held on for a 5-4 win in their first outing of the spring campaign.
Number of the Week: 90 - the number of wins for the women's basketball team in their last 92 games played at Gampel Pavilion.
