Starting after spring break, the library will begin loaning out Macintosh laptops to students for three hours intervals.

Students will be able to request at the front desk one of 10 laptops, which the library received for free from the Neag School of Education. The laptops can be taken out for up to three hours, and they must remain within the library entrance and exit gates.

In order to make it easier for students to take out the laptops, they will be able to search the library database and find out how many laptops are available, how many are taken out, and when they are due back, according to Library Circulation and Reserves Manager David Avery.

Avery said the fine for late returns will be $1.00 for every hour a laptop is late. After 15 hours, students will have to pay a lost/replacement fine, which has not yet been determined.

Marian Farley, the assistant vice provost for university libraries, said the library sought laptops because students expressed a need for them. According to Farley, a 2006 poll showed that 45 percent of UConn students want more access to public computers.

Avery said an advantage of making laptops available is that they can have computer access wherever their favorite study spot may be.

"We've always heard students want more flexibility, but we didn't have the money," Avery said. "So, when we heard about these laptops, we jumped on it."

Farley said students have also been complaining about the noise on the computer level.

Now, students who need a computer to study will be able to take the laptops to a quiet floor.

"We want more of an atmosphere of research and study instead of a social environment," Farley said.

Drilon Toska, a 6th-semester biology major, agrees that the computer level is too loud for studying.

"It's good that you can go somewhere more private instead of staying on the first floor, which is kind of loud," he said.

The laptops will have wireless Internet access and Microsoft Office on them. In addition, the laptops will be configured so that when someone logs off of them, anything they may have saved will automatically be erased. Farley said this feature was installed mainly for safety and privacy reasons.

"We don't want to give out any student information," Farley said.

Both Farley and Avery said they know many students like to bring their own laptops to the library, but that the new laptops will be a good resource for those who don't own laptops.

"I think it will be good for people who don't have their own laptop, or don't want to carry one around," said Katy Seabrooke, a 4th-semester accounting major. "I prefer to bring my own, though, because all my stuff is saved on it. Maybe I would borrow one if I just had to do research."
