The Honors Program has narrowed the search to two candidates to fill the position of program coordinator, although a hiring freeze put in place by the university has slowed the hiring process.
Despite the hiring freeze, Honors Program Director Lynne Goodstein remains optimistic that an offer will be made.
The two candidates were vetted by current honors students in the Shippee pit Monday, Feb. 16 and Thursday, Feb. 19.
"We want somebody that will be able to relate to students, yet also somebody that is professional and will be able to get the job done," said Hannah Mondrach, a 2nd-semester Italian and Spanish double major.
The former program coordinator, Missy Korduner, left UConn at the end of last semester for a position as assistant director of first year programs at Louisiana State University.
"She was a wonderful program coordinator," Goodstein said.
The Honors Program advertised for a new coordinator in the publication Chronicle for Higher Education and internally within UConn's Honors Program and Division of Student Affairs.
Ryan Brown ¬- one candidate for the position - is currently a staff assistant with the honors program at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. The other candidate, Rebecca Gates, has a master's degree in counseling and student personnel and is the current Resident Life director at the State University of New York at Brockport.
Gates appeared before students on Feb. 19 and fielded a range of questions concerning both her educational background and personal interests.
She revealed to students her interest in music, which include Radiohead and The Flaming Lips amongst her favorite musicians.
"It's time for some new challenges and new opportunities," said Gates when asked about her plans for the position, should it be offered. She followed up by outlining several interesting ideas for new projects and programs.
