Coach Glenn Marshall's smile sums up the mood for UConn men's tennis. Although last Saturday they lost their first match of the spring season at the hands of a strong Stony Brook team, Marshall remains upbeat.

An average pre-Big East match at West Point turned into a historical night for the Husky tennis program. For the first time in program history, UConn defeated Army, beating them 5-2.

"Stony Brook was a stronger team than us, but beating Army for the first time in my 17 years here, and in program history; it's amazing," Marshall said.

The win against Army has had an effect on the team that is 3-1 this spring, and 7-2 for the year.

"The Army win is positive because it proves the level we think we are, and the team we have is strong," Marshall said. "It validates the beliefs we had coming into the season. To play like we did the first two weekends is really positive."

The Huskies hope to continue their trend of success this Saturday when they travel to Providence, R.I. to take on Brown University, another tough opponent. The tennis facility in Providence is indoors, and like most matches early in the year, UConn will have to adjust to the quicker surface with faster serves and faster returns.

"Points don't last as long as they do outdoors. The reaction time becomes much more important," Marshall said.

Following the Brown match, UConn travels to Orlando for their last preseason matches before the Big East schedule starts.

"The preseason matches are very tough to get us ready for our Big East opponents. While our Florida trip will help us get ready to play outdoors later in the spring," Marshall said.

The Huskies hope to be ready for this Saturday, and Brown will be a good match to keep their strong start going. Right now, Andrew Marcus is leading the way with a tremendous start. The sophomore earned Big East Player of the Week. If his team keeps earning accolades and notching historical victories, Marshall's smile may not leave his face.
