The women's tennis team will try to emulate the men's basketball team's success, as they travel west to face DePaul and Marquette this weekend.
Last weekend was tough for UConn, as the Huskies lost both matches to Stony Brook and Army, 7-0 and 6-1, respectively.
"We were excited to finally be playing our first competition of the year," coach Glenn Marshall said. "Our lack of match play was one of our weaknesses throughout the weekend. It especially showed against Stony Brook, but against Army we improved. We are smarter and tougher after the two losses."
The Huskies are now 0-3 on the season, but the team is staying upbeat. Emily Herb and Alexa Gregory, who are injured, are set to come back in mid-to-late March.
"Injuries are definitely making it tougher on us at this point," Marshall said. "The team is staying very positive about the situation, and the two players who have now entered the line-up, Emily Searle and Jenny Marotta, have been working hard and improving every day."
Both opponents have started the spring strong; Marquette is 7-4 on the season, while DePaul is 6-1. Last season, the Blue Demons made a run to the Big East semi-finals before falling to Notre Dame and finishing fourth.
As for Marquette, the Golden Eagles finished fifth in the Big East tournament. Marshall and the Huskies expect tough matches from their conference foes this weekend.
"The two matches this weekend will be very difficult," Marshall said. "Both DePaul and Marquette are two of the top five or six teams in the conference. We will use the opportunity to get more match-tough, and to keep working on improving each of the players' games."
