Issue date: 3/2/09 Section: Sports
Game of the Week: UConn 72, Notre Dame 65, Gampel Pavilion (Saturday)
The Huskies outlasted a desperate Irish squad on Senior Night and fittingly, the night belonged to the players who were saying goodbye to Gampel. Jeff Adrien dropped a game-high 25 points after starting the contest by hitting seven straight field goals. Craig Austrie, as he has been throughout his career, was quietly clutch when it counted. Austrie stepped in to bury two crucial free throws in the final minute when Hasheem Thabeet was forced out of the game after being fouled by Notre Dame's Kyle McAlarney.
Performance of the Week: A.J. Price at Marquette (Wednesday)
The senior point guard was unstoppable against the Golden Eagles, exploding for a career-high 36 points on 8-for-13 shooting from beyond the arc. That same night, the Huskies earned coach Jim Calhoun's 800th career victory. On a night for reflecting on Calhoun's brilliance throughout his tenure at UConn, the coach offered the highest praise possible for Price, saying the performance had him thinking about Husky greats like Ray Allen and Ben Gordon.
Wish We Were There: Boston University Track & Tennis Center (Friday/Saturday)
The men's track team dominated the New England Championships to capture their 15th team title in the last 16 years. Three Huskies came away with individual medals, including senior Brian Gagnon who outran teammate Mike Rutt to win the 800 meter with a time of 1:48:66.
The Big Letdown: Women's tennis swept at DePaul (Saturday)
Six singles matches and three doubles matches were played on Saturday afternoon at DePaul's Lakeshore Athletic Club and not a single UConn player nor team was victorious.
Number of the Week: 16
The number of times this season that the women's basketball team has beaten an opponent by 30 or more points.
