Jason Ortiz, USG comptroller discusses his decision to veto The Paint Ball Club's funding request at a Feb. 18, USG meeting.

A Feb. 18 impeachment petition against USG comptroller Jason Ortiz was withdrawn Saturday, Feb. 28, after Mary Lorenz, the multicultural and diversity senator who filed the petition, decided that resolving her concerns through other channels would be more appropriate.

Originally, Lorenz pushed for an impeachment on the grounds that Ortiz had a bias against non-academic student clubs after comments he made at a Feb. 4 meeting. She argued this bias fell under the definition of discrimination, which is against the university policy he is obliged to follow. After Ortiz attempted to veto a $12,000 funding request from the paintball club, Lorenz filed for impeachment the morning before Ortiz's veto was overturned by the senate.

Ortiz, who has been considering running for USG president next year, maintains that his comments were meant to protest the light scrutiny some clubs like paintball receive while other groups - like those organizing charitable alternative breaks - were heavily examined. He also says that his paintball veto was an attempt to curb what he saw as frivolous spending in tough economic times.

Ha, looks like Lorenz realized that not a single student outside of USG was behind her on this motion and that everyone saw how she was just trying to fulfill a grudge she held. (Continued…)

Its a shame that Lorenz withdrew her impeachment. Ortiz violated not only USG rules, but possibly state laws as well. I would reference the recent cases of Boise State University and Wayne State University. (Continued…)

Dear 'Concerned Student',

Are you honestly suggesting that Ortiz violated state laws by saying excessive funding for the paintball club is unwarranted when other charitable clubs get heavily scrutinized?

My guess is that you are Mary, or are close with her. (Continued…)

What state law are you referencing that Ortiz may have violated? USG is governed by the same state laws that other trustee groups at UConn are and there is nothing in those statutes that says anything about what Ortiz did. (Continued…)

I think it is pretty clear that everyone other than Lorenz, her cronies, and the paintball team knows Ortiz did what was right.

This impeachment fiasco was merely a ploy by a vindictive wanna-be politician that everyone saw through. (Continued…)

It's a shame that only those who were actually attentive to what was happening in the Senate actually know what happened. During the overturning senate, and the previous senate, Ortiz continuously compared Paintball and their application to other groups, which is what he did illegally. (Continued…)

Might I point out that Concerned Student is OBVIOUSLY Mary Lorenz pushing her own power-tripping warped agenda.

Impeach her, not someone trying to help us. (Continued…)

There is little doubt that if elections for USG were tomorrow Ortiz would likely win the president's spot (if desired), and Lorenz would probably be out as senator. (Continued…)
