In its efforts to put its recent struggles behind them, the women's lacrosse team is hoping that history will repeat itself when they head to Hamden to face Quinnipiac Today at 2:30 p.m.
Despite coming up short during last season's game against the Bobcats, the Huskies hold a 10-1 advantage in the all-time series against Quinnipiac. They will look to add another win to that total in their attempt to get their first victory of the 2009 season after dropping their first three games by a combined score of 43-29.
The first three games have seen a few continuing trends develop for the Huskies, one of which has been the inability to play consistently for the game's entire 60 minutes. In the first two games of the season, they were able to climb to early leads, but let that slip after being outplayed in the second half.
In their most recent game, a 17-10 loss to Fairfield, the Stags came out of the gates on a 15-3 run, putting the game out of reach early. In the game's final moments, however, UConn showed some guile as it went on a 5-0 run of its own, led by the spark provided by reserve Lauren Gunning, who scored twice and added an assist in the game's final 1:23.
While their inconsistency has been a cause for concern, the Huskies have seen promise in the development of a pair of freshmen, M.E. Lapham and Kiersten Tupper. Along with senior captain Whitney Michele - who has been a model of consistency during her four years - Lapham and Tupper have emerged as two of the top playmakers on a young team. Tupper is averaging three assists per game, while Lapham is having no trouble finding the net, having scored five times - including a hat trick against Hofstra - in her young career.
Since they already have three games under their beltd, the Huskies may hold a slight advantage over the Quinnipiac squad, who has yet to see the field in regular-season competition. The Bobcats, however, are coming off of a very successful 2008 season. They tied for the regular season Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship, after which head coach Danie Caro was dubbed NEC Coach of the Year.
Caro's team will be led on the field by the conference's reigning Player of the Year, Tiffany Manzi. The senior midfielder led the team with 49 points (37 goals, 12 assists) and will look to do more of the same when her 2009 season gets underway at 2:30 pm.
