With NFL free agency in full swing this week, the UConn football team will look toward two transfers of its own to lead the offense when spring practice begins March 17.
After former offensive coordinator Rob Ambrose left Storrs to be the new head coach at his alma mater, Towson, the Huskies made an impressive pickup, snagging Joe Moorhead from the University of Akron.
Moorhead, who was an assistant coach the last five seasons for the Zips helped lead Akron to be just one of 17 schools in Division I football ranked in the top 50 in rushing offense, passing offense, total offense and scoring offense. The Zips saw success using Moorhead's "multiple-no huddle" pass-oriented offensive scheme, just the remedy for a sluggish UConn passing game that ranked 109th in the country last season. In his last season at Akron, Moorhead helped the Zips to be the most improved school in the nation in total offense.
Likely running the show for the Huskies next season will be another transfer, Zach Frazer formerly of Notre Dame.
Frazer, the 9th best quarterback in the 2006 class according to scout.com, one spot ahead of 2008 Heisman winner Sam Bradford - transferred to UConn following his freshman year where he lost out on the starting job to Jimmy Clausen.
Seeing two starts in the Huskies 2008 campaign due to injuries to starter Tyler Lorenzen, Frazer put up the best passer efficiency rating of any UConn signal caller at 103.16. Despite throwing just two touchdowns with six interceptions, Frazer showed poise and the ability to throw the ball deep when he came in for an injured Lorenzen and led the Huskies to victory on the road over the Cardinals.
With a highly touted quarterback ready to sling the ball down the field and a new offensive coordinator with a fast paced, no-huddle mindset, the Huskies will look toward these two transfers to help lead the offense.
